The drill collar is located at the lowest part of the drill string and is the main component of the lower drilling tool assembly. Its main function is to make the drill bit work smoothly. As an essential component of oil rig drilling, the drill collar adds weight to the bit so as to effectively break rock. Usually comprised of steel or carbon steel, drill collars are subject to abrasion and slurry erosion that limits their downhole life and increase project maintenance costs.
